Last year, Lighthouse Labs helped nearly 5000 people develop a daily coding habit through the 21 Day Coding Challenge. In 2019, we’re shooting for the stars with the goal of helping 10,000 people learn to code and more than $30,000 in prizes up for grabs.

Starting May 1, participants work through an educational, habit-building 21-day curriculum designed to teach them basic JavaScript. If you can learn to build a new habit in just 21 days, we think one coding challenge a day is a great place to start.

Can You JavaScript?

Across a range of industries and disciplines, employers are looking for talent with at least a basic working knowledge of code. While there are many languages to choose from, JavaScript remains one of the most widely used programming languages out there, present on more than 95% of websites across the web.

JavaScript is broadly considered one of the easiest programming languages to learn, even with zero prior experience. It’s a great starter language with a quick payoff for curious coders; because JavaScript runs on any device with a browser, you can build just about anything and share it anywhere. You’ll be showing off your programming chops in no time - even 21 days, perhaps.

Whether you’re an aspiring coder dipping your toe in the JavaScript waters, or an out-of-the-box marketer looking for a common vocabulary with your developer team, you’ll walk away from the 21 Day Coding Challenge with a new skill and some bragging rights. Even experienced JS developers find something for them in the engaging curriculum and team camaraderie.

Coding In Community

Coding is more fun with community, and that’s why we offer participants the option to join the challenge as an individual or a team. Last year, our winning team from freeCodeCamp brought together everyone from absolute beginners to professional coders, while the all-women’s dev group who topped the leaderboard drew their 130 team members from a community Facebook group. Coding alongside others - sharing your roadblocks and triumphs as you work through the same challenges - is great for community-building.

Maybe you’ll join the challenge as an office team-building exercise. Perhaps you’re part of a cross-discipline networking group, and you’ll take this opportunity to start a team to build connections and network with others over a shared common goal. Or just maybe you’ll start a family team and foster a little friendly family competition. You’re only limited by your imagination - wherever you can share a challenge with someone and you’d like to build community, you can take part in the 21DCC together.

Ready To Win?

Best of all, there are amazing prizes to be won. The winning team earns a trip for two to Boston, including a tour of Harvard and MIT, two city passes, and access to the Museum of Science.

There are also finalist prizes, daily prizes just for completing your challenge on time, and team prizes for the team with the most points on the leaderboard by May 21.

Every successful participant walks away with an intro to JavaScript. If you're lucky, you'll walk away with amazing swag, too.
