Unlocking career growth

Before Oliver joined Lighthouse Labs’ Data Science Bootcamp, he worked as a Data Analyst with experience in healthcare, insurance, and finance. With around a year of professional experience at Bupa Healthcare, his work involved SQL, Python, predictive modelling, and financial reporting. While he enjoyed analyzing data, he realized his true passion lay in the technical side—data engineering and advanced analytics. He wanted to move beyond analysis to focus on how data is collected, stored, and processed efficiently.

Why Lighthouse Labs?

Oliver chose Lighthouse Labs because of its reputation as an established provider of tech education. "The main driving factor behind my career transition was my growing interest in data engineering and advanced analytics. Lighthouse Labs presented itself as the right fit, offering a structured learning path that aligned with my goals."

From classroom to career: the bootcamp experience and beyond

"My experience at Lighthouse Labs was intense but rewarding. The fast-paced curriculum pushed me to quickly apply new concepts, and the hands-on projects solidified my learning."

Some of the biggest challenges he faced included managing the workload and debugging complex data issues. "Balancing multiple projects was demanding, but it helped me develop strong prioritization and problem-solving skills. Working with messy data also pushed me to refine my data cleaning, transformation, and pipeline-building abilities."

Within a week of finishing the bootcamp, Oliver landed a role as a Data Scientist – Computer Vision at Healthcare Systems R&A Inc. His final bootcamp project, which focused on computer vision, directly contributed to securing the position. "The bootcamp gave me the technical foundation and hands-on experience needed to transition into a more specialized and technical role."

A future in data engineering

Oliver’s first role post-bootcamp focused on researching, developing, and building computer vision models for emotion classification. However, his long-term goal is to transition fully into data engineering, where he can deepen his technical expertise and work on large-scale data systems.

"What I appreciate most about my career now is the technical depth and problem-solving challenges that come with working in data analytics and engineering. I enjoy building data-driven solutions that help businesses optimize operations and make informed decisions. The ability to work on end-to-end data processes, from collection to analysis and reporting keeps my work engaging."

Building on his experience in data analytics, ETL processes, and cloud computing, Oliver is eager to take on the challenges of data engineering. "My next goal is to transition fully into a data engineering role, building on my experience in data analytics, data processing, data modeling, and cloud computing. I want to work on scalable data pipelines, real-time processing, and cloud-based architectures that support advanced analytics and machine learning applications." By focusing on the full data lifecycle, he aims to create efficient, reliable systems that enable businesses to harness their data more effectively.

Advice for prospective students

For those considering a transition into tech, Oliver emphasizes the importance of commitment. "If you're considering Lighthouse Labs, my biggest advice is to commit fully and treat it like a job. The learning curve is steep, but the hands-on experience is what makes it valuable."
